There are many occupations that seem to be dominated more by either men or women. The field of magic is often full of male magicians, and sometimes a female assistant. But unfortunately, the amount of female magicians is few and far between, less than 10% of all performers. Why is this?

Women in Magic Through the Ages

From ancient priestesses to the Salem Witch trials, the idea of women having skills in the magical and mystical arts have been on the decline for a long time. Up until the dark ages, magic, in non-abrahamic religions, was mainly a practice of women. Religions like Islam, Judaism, and Christianity did not condone magic of any kind. Witch trials were popular towards the end of the medieval era. Perhaps the fear of witch trials suppressed women from learning magic as it became popular again.

The Early 20th Century

In the beginning of the 1900’s, the “magician’s assistant “ became popularized with famous illusionist P.T Selbit. Selbit performed the now well-known technique of sawing a lady in half. Soon after, other magicians took to showing their skills with a lovely assistant at their side.

Famous Women Magicians

It was not until later half of the 20th century that women magicians were center stage. Names like Lisa Menno, Fay Presto, Misty Lee, and Dorothy Dietrich were featured across the country. As with many female performers in other fields, they paved the way for future generations of new women magicians.
